I had a radical new idea for my punctuation dilemma (the dramatic, but brief pause replacing the word "that") on the way home today. An attached (no spaces) double underscore.
The truth is__we're scared.
What do you think? I knew I would have to see it before I could tell, and I'm still not sure, but I think I like it. It's like a dash functioning as a comma. A single underscore doesn't do the trick, but the double one does. It creates a break, but not a huge one. A colon is the obvious, "grammatically" correct choice, but it just feels like too much to me.
So will this catch on? Someone tell me who to write to!
