If we were, in fact, a civilized society, then if a public health threat like, say, a swine flu pandemic came along, it would be mandatory for employers to provide paid sick leave. Guess what? It's not. Seems to me the president ought to be able to include that in any emergency declaration, like declaring martial law or something.
As it turns out, our diagnosis is not civilization, but bottom-line, short-term gains capitalism. Sigh.
