The other night at Chorale rehearsal, someone mentioned that we have a lot of ministers in the choir. This is sort of true. There are maybe 40 people total on a good day, and three of us are pastors.
The way it was said sort of implied that was a good thing, in case of emergency. It was kind of like how you'd want to have someone who knows how to build traps out of twigs if you're stranded on an island or in the woods. Or a doctor if a building collapsed in some remote place.
But it got me to thinking. What would it be like if some crazy, emergency tragedy happened that isolated the choir for some period of time, in heightened danger? Would the presence of three pastors make a difference? What kind of difference?
Would we shift into our professional roles fairly immediately? Would we band together and talk privately about our concerns about various people in the community and their spiritual health? Would we hold prayer services to help people cope? Would it be a good thing?
Or would three pastors be too many? Would we be territorial? Pastors are usually personalities who like to be leaders; people go into ministry because they like positive attention. Would we share that productively? Would we argue about how to best lead the people and keep their hope up? Knowing that basic needs like food and water would be our most immediate needs, would we even act in our roles, or would we just be more hungry, thirsty people, because this is the situation we've been trained to assist in?
So what about you? Would you rather be stranded on a desert island with one pastor or three? And would it matter which three? Because it sure would to me!

So long as it wasn't a prosperity gospel nut, I'd be happy to have a pastor along. Ideally, one that has coached survival tactics at church camp or something, but what are the chances?
Actually, on second thought, given the experience of lots of pastors serving in third-world places as missionaries, going on service trips building houses in Haiti, or counseling in war-torn regions, some of them might have pretty reliable survival skills & crisis-management skills.
The prosperity gospel thing stands, though.
