The economy fell apart a long time ago for the poor.
Check out this story from Mother Jones about qualified people being kept off of welfare so states can use the money elsewhere.
If I were one of those people who thought God directly punished countries for their behavior, I would say that the current financial meltdown is God's response to evil like this.
