Thomas Friedman has an important column in today's New York Times. For some reason, he says it's based on Grandma's advice. I guess he was afraid no one would listen if there wasn't something a little funny. (I don't know anyone's grandma who repeatedly gave advice that included the word "Google".)
Anyway, he points out that great countries need imagination and good governance, and that the U.S. still has a pretty good handle on the first, but that we've lost our capacity for the second. I would argue that the emphasis on standardized testing is threatening the first too, but it's definitely not as endangered since its source is the individual and not the collective.
Oh that people would pay attention to Friedman. Or his grandma, if she's really the one saying this stuff.
